Road Trip
How much for a road trip from Pennsylvania to California?

How Raod for a trip from Pennsylvania to California? I and three other friends are planning to go on a trip next summer in California, then back to Pennsylvania, what would you estimate the total cost for this trip? If are all the same you could break it down into cost of gas, Food, Hotels, and additional costs that would be useful. Also, if you have any tips for ways to cut costs and save money that would be helpful, thank you:)

You do not say where in Pennsylvania where in California. So I guess from Philadelphia to San Diego – which is about 2650 miles one way. Suppose you go back to San Francisco, 2880 miles a way, SD SF is 500 miles (shortest route) = 6030 miles round trip. Let's turn up to 6300 miles just to give a little buffer lateral, so get lost. Let's assume your car is 25MPG – you'll need 252 gallons of gasoline. Since we can only assume the price of gasoline, assume the worst cases and say that it is $ 5.00 gallon. (If more countries in the Middle East implode politically, especially Saudi Arabia – $ 5/gallon is not unrealistic). You will need $ 1,260.00 for gasoline. By the way gasoline in California is the most expensive in the country, if you pay $ 3.50 to Penn, they pay $ 4.25 to Cal today. Hotels – hotels along the way, i, e, 8 Motel type of places ranging from $ 50ish to 150ish per night. It all depends where in the country. If you and your friends are under 21, forget the rental of motel rooms. I would plan on disk requires only two nights in each direction. Possible drivers to run and not stop at all, but suppose you stop. 4 nights motel roadside, a room @ $ 100 = $ 400 per night. Without where and how long you will be Cal, it is difficult to estimate the hotels there. I would just like for Cal to be room $ 150 night on average. For a discussion lets assume that you spend 7 nights in motels at Cal = $ 1050. Gas and lodging = $ 1,260 + $ 1,450 = 2710. Divided by 4 = 678 each, we will round up to $ 680. Food, just give you a daily budget. Suppose $ 10/breakfast, 15/lunch $ $ 20/dinner per person = $ 45/person/day. X10 = $ 450/person day. Spend money ……… who knows, give you a budget for expenses. This is the place could cost about $. Entrance fees at national parks, tourist stuff (Alcatraz Tour), mechanical failure, T-shirts, etc … Tell you the total $ 1000/person budget for "extras"? Total per person = $ 680 + $ 450 + $ 1000 = $ 2130. How to cut costs – take turns driving on the way through the country you do not need a motel room. Down side is that you will not see much at night and you really should stop for prolonged rest. Do not eat extravagantly, buy food in grocery stores versus restaurants. Take a high MPG car, bring pictures and nothing else.
